Generically speaking, what you will miss the most is being your own SME.
First thing I always do is gently and persistently inquire EVERYWHERE about
what standards or legislation needs to be addressed. Sooner or later you
will get your list. Ask each person from three different angles on three
different days is my recce :-)

Then try and find a buddy. Either a tech writer in the field external to the
company or someone in the company who has a vast knowledge of the industry
and doesn't mind sharing it. The ideal is both. A few long chats later and
you will be well on your way to understanding the intricacies you need to.
