This is indeed deceptive conduct as Peter Rule expressed. The same situation is being experienced in Brisbane where agencies are taking money 'off-the-top'. A friend of mine recently 'reduced' her = asking price because the agency's client had determined that her skills would = be required for a much longer period than first expected. As the term was = much longer, she was happy to do this as it meant that she would not have to = get on the 'search' merry-go-round for some time (sound familiar?). Alas, was there a reduction! Conclusion, we should all take Peter's = advice and ask the questions before making a commitment. That way we get what = we have budgeted for after the agency takes their chop. I have had exactly this scenario in Melbourne with my current contract. You agree a rate, get the gig from the client, and then find out that = the agency will charge a 2% fee to put you on their payroll (or give you the option to use a managament company - I think about 4% is the lowest rate from them). Of course, when I queried this, at the time of contract signing, they said "oh everyone is doing it this way now". I was not = very happy, but there is not much you can do about it except walk - and few = of us would do that at that stage of the proceedings. It borders on deceptive conduct: but I blame myself of course, I should have asked more = questions. At the time, though, I didn't know to ask that question! It is really just another way for the agencies to reduce their overall = cost the client, making them more competitive I suppose. =20 Once bitten, I now make sure I understand exactly what fees are deducted from the go-get. =20 When they ask you what rate you want, ask them what/if they charge for payroll etc or any other costs to be deducted from the rate. Then tell = them what you want.
