I think I need to reply to Michael Granat's recent summary of Framemaker -
and, no, I'm also not trying to start a Frame vs Word debate <G>. However,
as someone who has made the transition, I must say I was somewhat surprised
at Michael's comments. In fairness to him, it did sound as though he was
referring to STRUCTURED writing, and in that sense much of what he said is
probably true. I also cannot speak for Frame 7. However, in FM6 you have
the option to work in either structured or unstructured mode, and in
unstructured mode FM IS a word processor, is not object orientated, and is
not primarily regarded as a page layout program (In Design and the
discontinued Pagemaker are touted as page layout programs).
Many people seem to categorise as follows: Word for simple wordprocessing
on short to medium documents, FM for long documents, manuals, books etc, ID
for page layout.
Again, as an ex-Word/now FM user, I did not find the transition to
UNstructured FM particularly difficult, and I think I use FM pretty much
the same way as I use Word, but with many extra features and a stability
and reliability with long documents that Word users can only dream about.
I could go on, but won't <G> - just wanted those of you who might be
contemplating moving to FM not to be completely put off by Michael's
comments. If you are going to go down the structured document road then,
yes, you will find it difficult, but that is because of the nature of
structured documents, and not a problem inherent to FM.
