I had to send out a message to my new professors yesterday requesting textbook information and I was surprised to receive messages back from 4 out of the 5 professors. However, only 2 of the professors provided book information, 1 is going to provide it this week, and 1 is trying to push me into another section *LOL*. The reason this is, she will have to change her material around to make it accessible and it would be easier to push me off on someone else. She made the claim that her text will not be ready until later in the summer and that there are 2 other sections she knows uses a standard text, 1 is even online she says *LOL*. I would love to take the class online as they would ultimately save me time and money, but I have never done so and I do not know if it is even accessible. Luckily though when I am requesting text information, I include my disability services coordinator in on the messages, his name is David. That was another thing, I sent the message to her, my name is Josh as everyone who can read knows *LOL*, when she responded back she addressed David only. When I responded to David I included her in the message regarding the point of accessibility in these other sections and the fact that her class fit into my schedule. He did respond back and told her that all sections have to be made accessible to students with disabilities. Basically no ifs and buts about it. He also gave her an option of giving us the textbook information, the sections that will be used, and letting us get the various books she is going to pull from in order to make her text. It is kind of ironic that she directed me to an online course because prior to sending out the messages requesting my book information, my coordinator in the disability office sent me a message. The message was requesting my presence at an online accessibility presentation that he is co-presenting on. This presentation is going to be given to the faculty and used to help them design their online courses with keeping accessibility in mind. He said that my presence and feedback would more than likely be valuable to the faculty in his opinion providing they use it.
