Then after you press Stop at the end of step 2, the imported track (1)
is still selected on its own above the recorded track (2) because 
recorded tracks are not automatically selected. CTRL + X, CTRL + N,
CTRL + V  gives you the imported track in its own window.

Or now you know that track 1 remains selected you could forget 
about the cut and paste. Work on track 1, then ENTER, down arrow,
ENTER which gives you track 2 (the recording) selected on its own.
