Does a document change unless you save it? You can edit it as much as you
like, but until you save it, it only exists in the wword processor. The
original is on the hard drive. Working with an audio program is the same.
You can edit as much as you like but until you save it, it isn't saved.

Delete the selection after you export it. Then the first item will always
be the track you want to work with.

Gene, your suggestion of marking the beginning with a left bracket and the
end of the selection with right bracket and then exporting selected audio to
a file works. However, it seems to me that if I have 15 or 16 tracks in a
cassette or album rip, things could get kind of confusing.

I don't know what the best way is to do this in terms of ease and
efficiency. I saw a post talk about using labels, which I know nothing
about. There is a way to set the start marker, which is actually the cursor
at the start of a selection, then set the end marker at the end.
But I haven't used Audacity to any extent for a long time so I'll let others
discuss that.
If you let the list know how you use the program in general in other words
what you generally do with it, you may be directed toward or get information
about ways to do what you use the program for that are easier than what you
are doing now. You may be using more complex methods for what you do than
are necessary and desirable.

What a great idea. I was just splitting the file into tracks abd exporting

I didn't follow the thread carefully, but it sounds to me as though you made
things much more difficult than necessary. Record the entire cassette, then
set the start and end marker and export what you have selected. You can set
the start marker at the beginning of a song, and the end marker at the end.
If you then export what you have marked, you will have the song, and only
the song as one file.
Since you aren't making multitrack recordings, but making a stereo
recording, MP3 Direct Cut may be a much better suited program to what you
want to do. If you wanted to alter the recordings, correct for the speed
being inaccurate, for example, then Audacity can do that, but just for
straight recording and editing a monaural or stereo file and have it be in
the MP3 Format, MP3 Direct Cut may be a better choice. But whatever you do,
you will save a lot of time and trouble if you record the entire cassette in
one file, then work with that one file.
I didn't follow the thread to any extent, but when I saw you talking about
multiple tracks, I thought you were making a recording with many tracks
added to each other running concurrently, such as a voice track, a track
for one or more instruments, etc. But I now see that you were simply
recording cassettes. To add to the confusion, each separate recording of
each song is not a track. It is a file or, perhaps, a clip.
It sounds to me as though you were recording each song separately, then
removing material from the beginning and end of each file. That is an
extremely inefficient way to do what you want to do and if that is what you
are doing, how to do this in a much more efficient way should be discussed.

That seems like it was a good learning experience.
I am not convinced of the benefit of breaking into separate tracks. One
option would be to record everything onto one track, clean up unwanted
material and then place labels on relevant portions of the track.
Apologies to those who already know about my audio item on labels. Here is
the download link. What I do not mention there is the ability from the File
Menu to Export Multiple. That lets you export the contents of each label to
a separate file.

Hi Larry,
Some of the wonderful folks on this list may laugh at me for this suggestion
but here I go. You may want to start all over again and first trim the
extra space off the beginning and end of the project. Then go through and
cut down the space between tracks to where you want them.
Then split the tracks. Like I said, just a suggestion that would work
using my limited knowledge of this great program.

There's something I'm not understanding. I'm following directions to split
new tracks from a selected track and am successfully getting my project
tracked. However I have excess material at the beginnings and ends of some
tracks and can't for the life of me seem to get rid of it without messing up
the whole project. I have just the track I want selected but it still wants
to spill over the track boundary to other tracks. Any suggestions?
