There is a certain amount of loss if you download to MP3 but I would advise
that people try MP3 at 320KBPS if they want to see what a good quality file
converted in this way from Youtube sounds like and want to use MP3 for this
purpose. If people don't like the results, then you could download as wave and
convert to some other lossless format, as one way to not lose any sound.
I don't know what other lossless formats different conversion programs and
sites offer.

The problem with the download approach is that the audio is a second
time encoded (sometimes a third one, depending on what had been
uploaded in the first place).
Better to download the original video (compressed by YouTube) and
extracting the audio, in most cases an aac file.
