You could move to the selection bar or toolbar with Control+F6, or you could switch to another window and back with ALT+TAB.

Hi Gary

It definitely says “Selection tool bar.”

I can’t replicate it, I just know it happens now and again.

When you say “move out of the track panel and back,” how would I do that?

I almost never do multi-track recordings, so going from one track to another wouldn’t be an option.

Thank you.

Don

Hi,

I think this message is coming from the JAWS script.  When you press [, or anything for which JAWS says the position, the script looks for the "real window" of the focused control.  (A real window  is the first containing window with a title.) From there it searches for a descendant window with the control ID of the selection start control.  It then reads the text of this control and re-formats it to be more speech-friendly.  If the resulting value is empty, it produces that message.  The message is spoken by JAWS, so it doesn't appear in a dialog.  The condition that we thought would cause this is if the Selection bar is not displayed, thus the wording of the message.  The Selection bar is the toolbar at the bottom of the screen with the edit boxes that set the start and end of the selection time range.  (You enable it by going to View > Toolbars > Selection Toolbar and pressing ENTER to check it.)  However, I have seen this happen when the toolbar is in fact displayed.  I have been able to fix this by moving to another track and back, or out of the Track panel and back-- I don't remember which, but it is a simple set of focus changes.  I don't know why this happens, and since I don't know how to make it happen and have been able to fix it easily I haven't tried to figure out what's happening.  Note that even if this message is generated, the key has already been sent to Audacity, so the selection start should still be marked.  I'll think about some additional information to display that might help figure out what is going on.  Can you consistently reproduce this?  If so, I might make you a special version of the script to try to figure out what's happening.

Thanks for the report.

    Hi Don,

I don't know where the error message is coming from when you press
the left bracket key. Next time it happens, can you copy the text
of the message dialog (just press ctrl+c), and paste into a
    message for this list?

    Hi all.

This will take a while, so get comfortable.

My computer has Windows 7, the latest JAWS and the latest Audacity
(though I don’t know its number.)

The odd thing it does doesn’t happen every day, thank heaven but
when it does it’s a pain in the neck.

I record radio broadcasts and later, when time permits I cut out
the commercials to only hear the parts I want.

I import the MP3 file into Audacity.  I start to fast forward
through to locate the first commercial. When I find it, I hit P
for pause and then try to hit the left bracket key.

At this point I get an error message that says

“To use this feature you must enable the (Something) tool bar.”

Sorry, I didn’t copy down the message last time I heard it.

Anyhow I don’t know how to enable any_ tool bar including whatever
one I am being prompted to enable.  So far, my only recourse is to
get rid of the AUP file, restart the computer, then import the
    original MP3 into Audacity.

    This takes time.

If anybody else has a problem like this one and knows an easier
    answer, please let me know.

    Thanks as always.

    Don
