Hi Curtis,
the problem may be that you have the sync-lock tracks option enabled.
To check whether this is the case, on the tracks menu, there is an item
called sync-locked tracks (on/off). If that item is checked, then press
Enter to uncheck it, otherwise just press Esc to close the menu.

I started writing a response, became preoccupied with clearing up after
yesterday’s deluge and am starting over from a different angle. Let’s
leave aside your current project for the moment. What I have set out below
may seem rather tedious, but try to follow each step. If it does not work
as advertised, tell us what went wrong and how. Try following these steps,
ideally while wearing headphones:
1. Open Audacity and do not open any files.
2. With Audacity set to record from your microphone, press r to start
recording and count to ten.
3. Press spacebar to stop recording.
4. Press spacebar again to make sure you have been recorded and press
spacebar to stop playback.
5. Press shift-r to record on a new track and recite the alphabet to –
say – j or as far as motivation takes you. While recording the second
track, you should hear the contents of track 1 in your headphones.
6. Press spacebar to stop the recording.
7. Press spacebar to play and you should hear both tracks, starting
from 1 and a respectively.
8. Press spacebar to stop playback.
9. At this point, neither track will be selected. Arrow up to track 1
and press Enter to select it (the screen reader should say “Track 1
selected”).
10. Press spacebar to start playing.
11. When you reach5, press x to stop playback and place the cursor at
that position.
12. Press Enter to deselect the track (the screen reader should say
“Track 1 not selected”).
13. Press down arrow to go to track 2.
14. Press Enter to select it (the screen reader should say “Track 2
selected”).
15. Press alt-t to open the Tracks Menu.
16. Arrow down six times to the Align Tracks submenu and press Enter.
17. Arrow down three times to Start to Cursor/Selection Start and
press Enter and the beginning of track 2 should be aligned with (or close
to) 5 on track 1.
18. The following steps are to confirm the fruits of your labours.
press Enter to deselect track 2.
19. Arrow up to track 1 and press Enter to select it.
20. Press j to go to the beginning of the track and press spacebar.
You should hear your counting up to 5 and, thereafter, the remainder of
your counting and the alphabet from the beginning.

I think we are almost there. From your description, you are setting the
cursor position with the sound track selected and the voice track
deselected. You need to do it the other way round – deselect the sound
track and select the voice track. Once you have moved to the required
spot, deselect the voice track, arrow to the sound track and select it.
Then apply the align tracks facility.

I have set the cursor with the x key and the left bracket key. I have the
voice track unselected and the sound track selected. I go to the aline
tracks menu and press enter on select cursor to start but the sound still
plays at the beginning instead of where I set the cursor. I must just be
missing a simple step or something.

Hi Curtis,
If you've got the voice track not selected, and the sound track selected,
and the sound track is not being moved as you want, then maybe there's a
problem with the cursor not being where you think it is.
A couple of ways of checking the cursor position: First, if you press
spacebar to start playback, then this starts from the cursor position.
Second, when there is no playback, if you press the left bracket key, then
a set left boundary position dialog opens, and the position shown is the
cursor position.
How are you setting the cursor position to where you want it?
On way to do this is that during playback you can press the X key, which
stops playback and positions the cursor at the point where playback stops.
A thought that occurred to me is that maybe you are just pressing the
pause button during playback, and assuming that the the cursor is placed
where you press pause. This is not the case.
Do let us know how you get on, and describe any problems you are still
having.

what you want to do. Here is one option.
As both Robert and I mentioned, there are numerous ways of achieving
mud splat.1. Record your narration onto a track, perhaps leaving a pause for the
splat onto a separate track with shift-r.2. Press j to go to the beginning of the recording and record the mud
relevant word.3. Select the track with your narration and place the cursor after the
point after the relevant word. An alternative is simply to copy and paste4. Deselect that track and select the track containing the mud splat.
5. From the tracks menu, press Enter on Align Tracks 6. Arrow down to
Start to Cursor/Selection Start and press Enter.
That will move the mud splat from the beginning of the recording to the
material to where you want it. Depending on the result you are aiming for,
that may or may not be effective.
