Here is what I would do and if anyone has a better way please! pass it on.
When a file is imported in to audacity it creates a new track for the file. I
then cut the audio from the track and paste it to the track I want it to be on.
Example you have audio on track one which is the first file you imported.
Importing the second file creates track two. For safety I press
Command-Shift-a for mac which I believe translates in to control-shift-a for
windows to deselect everything and then I use the down arrow to move to track
two and press enter to select it. press the letter j to go to the beginning of
that track and shift-k to select from there to the end of the track. I then
press control-c to copy, pres press enter to deselect track to, up-arrow to
track 1, press k to move to the end of the track and then control-v to paste
the audio to the track. I then down arrow to track two and close it with
shift-c.
