[audacity4blind] exporting files

Hello again, I have a question on exporting files from Audacity. No matter what
file format I choose from the pop up list when I export, Audacity always seems
to save my file as a wave type format. Am I missing some library or extension?
I tried exporting as mp3 or AAC / Mp4 files. Thanks,
