Hi David,
I haven't heard of this problem before. Shut down Audacity as your
computer suggests, re-open Audacity, and try opening that file and
listening to it - the
keyboard shortcut to open a file is control+o, then type in the path and
filename and press enter. Press the space bar to play. If you don't hear
anything, either you simply recorded silence or nothing at all.
the best thing to do while you're becoming familiar with Audacity is to
immediately play back your audio as soon as you have recorded it, just to
ensure you recorded what you wanted. You might also want to clear Audacity
of all audio then try to load the file you thought you saved, and play it.
Assuming that works, you should be able to play the file in Winamp too. (I
don't have Winamp so cannot advise you on this, you can ask about it on
the pc-audio list www.pc-audio.org or the Yahoo blind tech group.)
If you want to be able to check the duration of a file or any other audio
you've loaded into Audacity, there's a plug-in I wrote for screen reader
users, you can obtain the zip file from
www.shellworld.net/~davidsky/duration.zip . It contains two files,
duration.ny (the plug-in) and duration.txt (instructions on how to use).
Instructions for installing plug-ins for Audacity to use are on my
plug-ins page www.shellworld.net/~davidsky/plug-ins.htm . Once you've
loaded duration.ny in your Audacity plug-ins folder, you'll find
"Selection duration" under the analyze menu alt+a.
I may need to be away from my computer for the next few days, if you
want you can also send queries to the regular Audacity list at
http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/audacity-users
It's a list for the general public who use Audacity.

Hi, I just tried to record a music file, which was successful I think. I
tried to play it in Winamp, and it won't play. It is a MP3 file, I tried
Windows media player with no success, and when I try to play it in Audacity,
I get an error message saying that the program needs to be shut down, and
asking me if I want to send a report to MS. What am I doing wrong?
