Hi BlakeDon't worry about upgrading driver. The old driver still works while installing the new. at the final step will ask you to restart your computer, then the computer will use the new driver after restarting.

I would suggest, having sighted help available in case you have unexpected problems. I'm not saying the sighted person needs to be present, but the person should be conveniently on call. Or, as an alternative, you can purchase a cheap USB sound card, perhaps for ten dollars or less, and use it while you update the driver for the other sound card. If you have USB headphones, you can use those for sound during the update. However, I very much doubt that using the Windows Update feature will give you a driver that supports Stereo Mix. You are updating the Microsoft Driver and no version of the Microsoft Driver is likely to support Stereo Mix, which is why I said to get the manufacturer's driver. Gene -----Original Message----- From: Blake Roberts Sent: Saturday, August 17, 2013 12:47 PM To: audacity4blind@xxxxxxxxxxxxxI found a sound card driver upgrade via Windows Update. I am nervous aboutinstalling the driver update. Does installing a sound card driver upgrade cause speech to stop working during installation? Unchecking it means you will not see the choice if the device is disabled. The setting, when on, does notprevent you from seeing Stereo Mix. If you don't see it, it may mean thatyou have to install the sound card driver from the manufacturer. Often, computers come with the Microsoft driver for the sound card and the Microsoft driver often doesn't support Stereo Mix. If you are already using the latest driver from the manufacturer and still don't see the option, then it may be that your sound card doesn't support that option and finding one that does may be necessary. I use a USB sound card thatsupports Stereo Mix. It's a Sound Blaster sound card. I don't know whichbrands and models of USB sound cards support Stereo Mix in Windows 7. My sound card is three or four years old and I don't know if that model is made any longer. If you purchase a sound card, try to verify, beforepurchase, whether it supports Stereo Mix and also purchase it from a storewith a good return policy. I've seen complaints about sound cards that are supposed to support Stereo Mix in Windows 7 but the feature doesn't work. You may have to try more than one sound card. There may be software yyou can use that mimics Stereo Mix regardless of the sound card being used. I don't know enough about that subject to discuss it. I have been using Audacity for several years and can not imagine my life without the program. How do I enable stereo mix on Windows 7 for recording Jaws and my voice using Audacity? I already have "show disabled devices" checked under recording tab of Manage Audio devices; stereo mix can not be detected by Jaws. I have a Realtek sound card.
