Howdy,
I just clicked on a .aup file and Audacity3 automatically imported it. Then I
just saved it as the new .aup3 file type. No bothering with the import or
open menu.

Stan, you are technically correct about Audacity 3.0 not opening earlier
Audacity projects. However, it will happily import them. You can either use
Import from the File Menu or, potentially confusingly, use Open (control+o).
Large projects will take a while to process. Once imported, an older project
can then be saved in the new format.

Also if you’ve updated to Audacity version 3.0.0 it won’t open the .aup
project files from previous Audacity version.

If it is an aup extension, it is indeed an audacity project that can be
opened. If it is an MP3, WAV, or any other extension that is already an audio
file, then it must be imported. There is a big difference between the two.
