I saw a useful suggestion on the regular Audacity users list to avoid the more "aggressive" noise reduction effect.

Once you've selected your noise profile, reduce it in volume (I forget how much). Use the amplify effect and apply a negative value. I'd suggest between negative 3 and negative 6db. then apply the noise reduction effect.
