[audacity4blind] Yelp With Multi Track Editing

I first split a stereo file into 2 tracks. I make sure the left channel
track is selected (by pressing Enter on it). I also make sure the right
channel track is not selected.
My goal is to keep only a little bit of the beginning of the left track and
delete the rest of the left channel. I want to keep all of the right
channel. Unfortunately, when I delete the remainder of the left channel, it
appears that the right channel is also deleted even though the right channel
(track) is not selected.
Do you have any thoughts on what step I am leaving out? This is my first
attempt to edit a single track of a multi track project.
