Hi Ron,

How do you know you've selected your song? Items in the effect menu are unavailable only if audio hasn't been selected first.

Also, what operating system are you using?

 Hi Ron,

Thanks - Audacity 1.2.x and 1.3.x operate somewhat differently which is
 why I asked.

You need to select some or all of what you've loaded into Audacity,
 control+a selects your full track.

 Open effects menu - alt+c.

You'll find there's an amplify effect. When you click on it, there will be
a number indicating how much to amplify your selection to get it to
maximum volume. Press enter or click on the okay button to accept this
 value.

 Hope this helps.
