This Saturday, I gave a Talk about the Audacity add-on at the NVDA Conference.
Here is roughly what I did:
Installed Virtual Audio Cable (ca. 25 Bucks or so)
- downloaded Audir.exe (free)
- downloaded SoX.exe
- Created two VAC cables Line_1 and Line_2
For L2, I went to recording in the Windows sound settings and enabled
"Listen to this device" under properties.
- Changed the Audacity output to Line_2.
- Checked if I still heard the produced sound
- Changed the NVDA output to Line_2 as well
Now comes Audir.exe into play
It is a console application that can create and manipulate the VAC
repeater instances. You could do most things in the dialog itself,
however, Audir has the advantage that it stores previously created
instances for the future.
Repeater is perhaps a bit misleading, it is rather a kind of linker or mapper.
Those are roughly the commands that I've used:
-> MME Line_2 Line_1 :thru
-> MME my_mic Line_1 :mic
The description after the colon are used as repeater window title and
also for storage.
I could also have defined
-> MME Line_2 mapper :monitor
instead of enabling "Listen to this device" but the latter ensures
that you hear NVDA even if the repeaters are stopped.
The conference uses Team Talk and I switched accordingly its input
from mic to Line_1 because it has the mix of all three sound sources.
For your case, you would use the sox command within the Audir console
because that way you can create an audio file.
-> sox Line_1 C:\\recording\\myfile.xyz :file1
Read in the documentation about the details.

I am using audacity to record via was loop back but this has a very
inconvenient side effect, which is my voice and the NVDA sound end up in
the same track, so there is no way of editing individual tracks. This is
stressing me because I have to take a huge care not to talk over NVDA
and if I have mistakes then I need to record the whole part again.
I also has a usb mixer and I sometimes use it to mix esternal things,
but due to limitations here I need to record the mixer and a usb
microphone going to the computer at the same time. Again, audacity won't
allow me to record two channels to two tracks on the same project.
What do I need?
A piece of software that either captures two devices and record a multi
track wav with the mix of them ... or a piece of software that can have
multiple instances running and each one capturing one device and
recording one wav file so I can use audacity to import these files as
individual tracks on the same project.
I could use OBS Studio to capture multiple devices because it records a
mp4 video with separate audio tracks one for each device. It would also
record of course a video and this imposes processor work, something I
would ratter prefer to avoid because some of the stuff I am
demonstrating are kit heavy anyways.
I have tried VoiceMeeter Banana but it is unfortunately not accessible,
at least for me.
So, again, I need:
A software that captures multiple devices, records a wav or similar
multi track file and also mixes and sends stuff to my hear phone so that
I can hear what is being recorded.
Either this or a software that captures devices individually and records
what is flowing through and also outputs the flow to my ear phones.
OBS could kind of do it. In mac, Audio hijack was the perfect solution
but on Windows I am struggling to find a reliable solution.
