You've not missed anything obvious. It's unlikely that normal macros
will get this ability. However, there's a new feature that is under
development called "Python Scripting" that is capable of traversing
directories and sub-directories. Python scripting will become
available in the next Audacity release. There aren't any published
Python scripts for Audacity yet, but the scripting feature will be
available in the next Audacity release so that anyone that has
knowledge of Python programming can start writing some.
