Yeah, that's how I use amplify. I usually use it to increase
volume, but it depends.

Thanks. When I was applying the Amplify effect, usually to
decrease the
volume, not to increase it, I was not sure of the DB values, so I
was doing
it on the percentage scale. The track would be at 49%, and I
would decrease
it to 39.

Amplify does not go over 0 dB (unless you allow it too or you
press
control+r to apply the effect twice).
But this doesn't say that the overall mix isn't going to be to
high.
You could do the following:
1. adjust the gain of the two tracks until they are balanced
(Shift+Alt+Up/Down arrows on the focused track, no need to select
them)
2. Select all (Control+A)
3. Mix down to new track (Control+Shift+M) 4. Control+A again
5. Amplify 6.
delete the mix track (Shift+C) The two tracks do now sum to
exactly 0 dB.
If you want some head room (for mp3 export for instance), you can
force
amplify in step number 5 to increase the volume less.
For instance, if you want -3 dB and amplify shows 5.231 dB, you
would simply
subtract 3 from this number which gives 2.231 dB.
Alternatively, you can repeat step 5 immediately (step 5a) and
enter
-3 the second time.

If your voice is not loud enough, you can use audacity's
"amplify"
feature to adjust the volume of a single recorded track. I've
used it
and it doesn't seem to negatively affect the sound.

Thanks. I will probably need to turn down the volume of the
track,
somehow my voice comes out tiny and distant through the
microphone if
the track is at its original volume, and with volume decreased,
I
begin to sound clearer.
This seemed to be more prominent when I was using my headset as
speakers for playback, so I opted to use my external speakers.
I have
a couple of configurations I can experiment with.

Record with headphones so Audacity will play back the song in
your
headphones and you will sing along.

In the older versions of Audacity, if you sang along with a
karaoke
track, you would first import the track, then create a new track
which
would become track 2, and start recording. As the recording
started,
Audacity would automatically create a track 3, which would be
the mix
of tracks
1 and 2. In
the newer versions of Audacity, if you record with overdubbing
and
choose to record as a new track, when the recording is finished
and
you play it back, you discover that Audacity recorded your
singing and
also the instrumental track as it was being played back during
your
singing. So, now you have a secondary instrumental track in the
mix.
How do you avoid it? If I were to choose to append to existing
track
instead of new track, or if I turned off overdubbing, I would
not hear
the instrumental track at all, so I would be unable to follow
along.
But if I overdub, the overdubbing is recorded onto the new
track.
