Hi David! Thanks for your help, but I think my machine just isn't rigged out to do this. I read somewhere that Sony specifically ask Realtec to provide chips that don't provide a Stereo Mix option. Anyway, I've got other questions now, coming right up. Hi Robbie, Have you checked out the recording page of the windows sound dialog as Gene has already suggested? Once disabled devices are set to be shown, is there any sign of stereo mix or something similar? If there is, it may need enabling. For details see Gene's post, or the sound dialog in windows vista or 7 section of my jaws guide. If you don't have any success with that, do you know any of the following: 1. the model number of the vaio laptop. 2. the sound chip it uses. 3. the supplier of the sound driver, for example microsoft, or realtek, etc, David. ----- Original Message ----- From: Robbie <tickleberryfun@xxxxxxxxx> To: audacity4blind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: Sent: Tuesday, 1 May 2012, 14:21 Subject: [audacity4blind] Re: Recording Skype conversations. Hi David! I'm using a Sony Vaio running Windows 7. The trouble is I can't select the speakers as an input device. Obviously I don't want to use the speakers as a microphone replacement, but I want to record in Audacity what ever the computer sends to the speakers. No chance it seems. I've also got an external sound card, but selecting that as input device doesn't work either, because Audacity records what is coming in through the sound card's input channels. Quite logical, but again I don't want to record what's coming in, but what's going out to these devices. Hi Robbie, What's the make and model to the computer that you're using? Also, which version of windows is it running? Hi gale! I can't manage to record streams or other stuff coming over the speakers. I selected Microsoft Soundmapper as input device, microphone being the only other option. However I'm recording only silence. Got any advice? Where do you find "listen to this device". In the control > panel? "Listen" only exists on Vista/7. Open "Sound" in the Windows Control Panel, choose the "Recording" tab, select the headset or microphone and choose "Properties" then choose the "Listen" tab. It's software playthrough, so might create too many echoes. If you had a way to unmute the microphone hardware, that would be on the "Playback" tab, select the headset or mic, choose "Properties" then the "Levels" tab. But most Vista/7 machines do not have this.
