Hi Louise
Make sure you check the Overdub function in the transport (alt+r) menu, and
all track in project is unselected, then do the folowing
1. Play the recorded track to the place wich you want to start recording new
track.
2. Stop and move cursor to that place by pressing shift+a. You might need to
play again to make sure you move cursor to the correct position.
3. Now press r to record new track.
That's the way I've workedwith multi track recording, and hope that work well
for you.

You certainly can. This the default setup for recording. Put down
your first track and then place the cursor where you want the second track to
start. Simply hit R for record and you're sorted. The two tracks will play
together
