I suspect you will gain much knowledge more quickly by talking to Ted than what
follows, but for completeness:
As well as selecting track 2, you need to make sure that the karaoke track is
not selected. If they are both selected, you will adjust the level of both
tracks.
Ted will make Audacity seem much less daunting than my clumsy textual
descriptions.

Thank you so much for leading me to your tutorial. I will surely try it out
with my audacity project.
So I have 2 tracks in my audacity window right now, one is the karaoke track
which the screen reader announces with its name and the other is the one with
my vocals which the screen reader announces as track 2.
So I select track 2 by pressing enter on it and then go to the effects menu and
choose the amplify option as I want my vocals to be louder.
But when I press enter on it, the screen reader announces the name of my
karaoke track instead of saying track 2, which is what I need to work with.
Please advise.

You are over-thinking the process. As Ted said, pressing spacebar
will stop. That is, it will stop both the karaoke track and the
track onto which you are recording. Do it like this:
1. Go to the point in the karaoke track a little before you want to
start singing.
2. Press shift-r. That will start recording on a new track while
playing the karaoke track.
3. At the relevant time, start singing.
4. When you have finished singing, press spacebar to stop recording.
You can then adjust levels and whatever else you want to do to the

Thanks for your suggestion. I followed all the steps that you suggested.
So there is a bit of music at the beginning and then I have to start
singing. So I press Shift plus R to start a new recording, but when
I press space to play the karaoke track, the recording stops.

on and set your preferred microphone. Go to the transport menu by
pressing Alt+N, go into the transport submenu and make sure overdub
