Which operating system & version? Which version of Audacity?
When you say "the same Audacity setup" do you mean the version of audacity
Have there been any operating system or driver updates (are automatic
updates all turned off)?
Has any other software been installed recently?
If there have been no updates at all then it must be failing hardware.
Check that plugs and sockets are clean. Do you have another microphone etc.
you can experiment with?

I have used Audacity for years and never had this problem, but a friend of
mine just had this happen today and requests any suggestions on stopping
it. Audacity is being used to record a book being read aloud for the
blind. This has been done for years on the same Audacity setup without
this problem occurring. Today, for the first time, random clicks are
audible between words. Nothing on the setup has been changed. I suggested
that they probably can be removed with the Audacity "noise reduction"
feature, but what could be causing this?
