It would be desirable to use Wasapi if possible. Firstly, it makes a
bit-perfect copy, secondly it can record in 24 bit and thirdly, it
doesn't go through the analogue round trip. My stereo mix (=What you
hear) was awful when the audio interface was providing it.
Of course, there are differences from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Are all enhancements turned off?
If the sound is muffled, then the bit depth is hardly the culparate
since that has more influence on dynamic range and a higher noise
floor. It does rather suggest that the sample rate isn't up to the
task. Check all possible settings for it, Audacity, the hardware tab
etc.
Also, make sure that you actually record the system sound and not the
playback through the internal microphone.

Yes, there could well be a difference between the Behringer and stereo mix.
I would use stereo mix as a last resort. Are you able to record from
Amazon
with the Behringer - it would need to be set as the default card. You
would
have to kill the JAWS speech once recording started if you cannot route it
somewhere else.
Can you connect a set of headphones to listen to the recording coming off
Audacity? That will give you a better idea as to whether the problem is
occurring during the recording, which I suspect it is.

Thanks for responding. I'll try to answer all your questions. It's hard
to
tell the quality of the source as well as the audacity playback since it's
coming through the little laptop speakers. My default sample rate is 44.1
and I'm not sure where to find the bit rate setting to check that. My
records and cassettes were recorded through a small Baringer USB mix. For
these current recordings I've used this mix as a separate card to channel
Jaws out of the recording. Would there be a difference using Wasapi instead
of Stereo Mix? I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks again.

Hey Steve, disappointing. Some questions follow.
What does the recording sound like in Audacity before you export? If it
sounds good at that point, it seems that something is going wrong in the
export process. If it is muffled in Audacity the problem would be with the
original recording.
You mentioned that you have set recording quality to high. What is the
default sample rate and default bit depth? I suggest a minimum of 44.1khz
and 16 bit respectively as a minimum. Given that your previous recordings
were ok, I suspect you have set those values appropriately.
Does the sound seem ok as you are recording? I have had no experience with
Amazon Music and do not know what quality is like. Again, I imagine you
would have noticed if that was an issue.
Did you record your cassettes and records through stereo mix or via a
cable?

Hello,
I've been doing some recordings from Amazon Music and am not happy with the
quality of the sound of my recordings. I've recorded many cassettes and
records with great results. I'm using a Dell laptop with Real tech card
and
using Stereo Mix. I've set the recording level at -6 db. I have recording
quality set to high in preferences. I run amplify before making labels. I
export to mp3 using the insane presets. The end result just doesn't sound
very good, kind of muffled, just low quality sound. Any suggestions? Any
help appreciated.
