That's only true for integer sample formats. The highest possible
value is -1 (the positive side does not even reach 1).
However, 32-bit float allows temporarily amplification far beyond 1 or 0 dB.
You can test this:
- amplify e.g. a chirp tone.
- press control-r to repeat the former amplification a few times.
Read the peak either with my tool or the amplify effect. The latter
will propose a negative value to amplify by, as supposed to a positive
