[audacity4blind] Re: Playback doesn't play whole selection

Yes, setting the audio buffer to 0 seems to resolve the playback
problem with Wasapi.
However, this is dangerous when one wants to switch hosts.
IMO the buffer settings should be individually adjustable for any
host/device configuration. In other words, the user should be able to
save working presets instead of adjusting hosts, input devices, buffer
settings, channels and latency corrections on each switch.

Hi Robert,
thanks for the steps to reproduce. I can reproduce the problem on Windows 10
64 bit using realtek onboard sound. As you say, the length of the lost audio
seems to be roughly the length of the audio buffer in recording preferences,
and changes when that is changed.

David.

Hi David
Steps to reproduce:
- New Project, Host = Wasapi
- Generate tone
- set cursor (e.g. home key)
- zoom to normal (Ctrl+2)
- expand selection to the right (Shift+Right) and press play
- repeat last track until you'll hear something

On my system, the selection must exceed 110 ms or 4853 samples until I
hear a short click. As I said before, Loop Play gives an audible
feedback with the first expansion - as the other hosts do.
In other words, the last audio buffer is not sent to the output before
the stream is closed.

Unfortunately, this behaviour seems not to be the case on all systems.
Gayle suggests that it is a interface question. However, all of my
four sound cards act in the same manner (C-Media, SoundBlaster,
Lexicon, Behringer).
My Windows OS is Windows 7 home premium, 64-bit.

Hi Robert,
I still can't reproduce this problem. Can you give some precise steps to
create a project where I'll be able to hear the problem?

thanks,
David.

Hi Robbie
I'm experiencing the same problem but only if the host is Wasapi.
The playback is shortened by a fixed amount.
The only possibility to play the whole selection with this host is to
loop it (shift+space) or to change to another host.
Therefore, you should try with other hosts in order to see if it's the
same issue.

Hi Robbie,
uploading an example sounds like a good idea,

David.

Hi David!
Yes it's baffling me too. I've never experienced this phenomenon before,
even
with this setup. I started noticing it when working on a project I
created
a

few days ago. Now it's affecting all projects, so I gather it must be
program-related rather than project-related.
When I play a track without selecting any audio I hear its full length.
Pressing j shift-k results in the last tenth of a second being omitted
from

playback. However, the length given in the selection toolbar is the
correct

one. I can upload an example if you like

Cheers! Robbie

Hi Robbie,
I haven't a clue what's going on.
If audacity was omitting the last tenth of a second of everything that
it
played back, would that fit all the symptoms?
Carrying on the your example of the word audacity in a track. If the
word
is

right at the end of the track, then if you play the track, do you hear
the
end
of the word?

David.

Hi David!
I'm experiencing this in all current projects that contain multiple
tracks.
I
can't reproduce it in a single track project.
Regardless of the length of the selection, roughly a tenth of a second
is
omitted by playback from the right selection boundary. Cut preview
includes

that fraction. Play up to right boundary omits it, while play from right
boundary plays from the true boundary.
Say I have the word Audacity in a track. If I play the track with out
selecting the audio, I hear the full word. When I select the audio from
start
to finish, playback only gives me Audacit, with the final y missing.
When
I

cut or amplify it however, all of the audio is affected.

Cheers! Robbie

Hi Robbie,
can you give a few more details so that I can try and replicate the
problem.
1. Does is occur is there is only a singe track.
2. If I selected say 10 seconds of audio, then roughly how much more
audio
gets affected? More than then a second?
3. Does it depend where in the audio you select the time range? That is
Beginning/middle/end?
4. What editing is affected? Cut/Delete/An effect?

David.

Hi!
I'm experiencing a problem with selection playback. When according to
playback
a selection has been correctly adjusted, the editing affects more audio
than

was played back. This is also reflected by cut preview, which leaves out
more
than playback suggests. Can anyone help? I'm using Audacity 2.1.1 with
JAWS
16
on Windows 8.1.

Cheers! Robbie
