When she was still alive, a friend asked me to clean up a variety of really bad
recording. I started her project with gold wave but then graduated to audacity.
I was very impressed at audacity ability to reduce noise. It is, however,
dependent on the sample noise one would be using. For instants, I was tasked
with taking out as much of a lawnmower sound as I possibly could. This did
artifact some of the presenters speech in a devotional, but not so bad as to
make the end product listenable comfortably. This was, by no means, a
professional production but just something that someone asked me to clean up as
best as I was able. I did a pretty good job of it all things considered. This
friend also asked me to clean up a number of her him and gospel songs that she
had recorded of her grandmother and her aunt from a cassette tape to MP3
conversion. She made an attempt to sing with these piano/organ pieces but her
microphone caused a lot of static. Again, I was able to take out more of the
piss or static with audacity better than with gold wave. Yes, I did this task
twice to see what the comparison would be on some of the tracks. Hands-down,
audacity did much better than gold wave.

Audacity noise reduction works pretty well for me, but as with similar
effects in other software, the quality is highly dependent on creating a good
noise profile. The effect is designed to reduce constant low level noise,
such as low level hiss. The effect is frequently criticised by people that
have unrealistic expectations.

As Portia mentioned, applying this sort of effect can introduce unwanted

I started using gold wave and now I use audacity almost exclusively. I,
personally, I think that the noise reduction tool in audacity is actually
superior to gold wave.

Keep in mind, noise reduction also can muffle or even drown out the
voice completely. There are some plugins that supposedly hardly do
this, if at all, but those tend to cost money, at least from my
experience.
So while a lot of podcast and voiceover gurus say that the noise
reduction in Audacity isn't great, I hope, at least, that it can meet
your needs to a degree.

While track is playing, use the [ and then ] keys to start and end
selection
on a part of the track that just has the white noise in it, then hit space
bar to pause playback, activate effects menu, hit enter on noise reduction
and activate the get noise profile button - it will be best if you can
select something like at least 2 seconds of the sound, with nothing else
being heard - then select the whole track using ctrl + A, and, reactivate
noise reduction off the effects menu, and now activate OK button, and, it
should try to remove ssounds/noises that match the signature it derived
earlier.
