The first thing to determine is whether sound is possible at all. Plug in a
USB device such as headphones, reboot, and see if you hear Windows music. Or
try to play something using a player while the USB headphones are inserted.
Worrying about the screen-reader complicates matters and introduces possible
complications.
Don't have the player run until you have plugged in the USB device. Since we
don't know what the error message is, I'm just guessing and also because I
don't have the technical knowledge to be sure what such a message would mean.
But it sounds as though something has failed in the machine that is necessary
for audio at a stage in the operation of the computer before any information
gets to any audio device being used.

JAWS doesn't handle switching audio devices very gracefully. Especially in
those older versions. Try making sure all devices are disconnected except
analog speakers, reboot, and see what happens.

Hi,
I can't get any sound out of my XP machine. I hope I can get it
working, as it has a line in jack and my laptop doesn't.
It was working fine. I'm sure JAWS was speaking when I shut it down the
last time. I hadn't used it for a while after I got my laptop, and one
day I needed to do an urgent fax. I booted it up and no JAWS. My wife
told me JAWS was on the task bar. Since it was urgent we gave up and
went to UPS or somewhere. I hoped so much that the speakers were muted
or the volume control had somehow gotten turned down!
Sometime later I had my daughter help me again-- it's hard to debug
without speech! No luck on the volume control or speakers being muted!
I thought I'd use my USB headphones and switch JAWS to them. I thought
that would deal with the case of the sound card not working.
Unfortunately, that produced the same thing. I didn't get the exact
error message-- I should have recorded the session-- but it was
something about not being able to find a sound system.
So I guess what I'm wondering is what could go wrong that would report
this for both the sound card and a USB headset, and happen without any
changes to the system?
The computer is a 32-bit Vaio desktop. I don't remember the kind of
sound card but it might be something like AC97. Man how quickly those
memories fade!
Any help greatly appreciated!
