The keyboard hypothesis doesn't support the statements of the original
question. It is clear that editing can be done after the file is saved. If a
conflict caused by the keyboard were the cause of the problem, you couldn't use
left and right bracket to save ever.
When I first started using Audacity, before you could select a track by
pressing enter, I was unable to edit a recording before saving it first. As I
understand the situation now, you can edit before saving but you have to make
sure the track you are editing is selected. I don't use Audacity enough to
explain exactly what you should do.
Your question about the version of Audacity may help explain the problem but we
don't know yet. The person simply may not be selecting the track before
editing.

I ask that because it's not necessary to save a file before editing.
Probably the left and right brackets don't work in your system because you are
using a keyboard other than US.
So what i suggest you tu do is:
Go to edit, preferences,keyboard.
There you may look for the key combination that is defined to select from
cursor to the right, and from cursor to the left.
By default, they are assigned to the lift and right brackets, but you can
choose other keys as g for left, and h for right. Hope that helps.
