Following on from David's most useful comments, some further ideas.
You can adjust the gain of the whole track. Either press shift-g and enter a
value. It can be a negative number if you wish. Alternatively, press
shift-alt-up arrow to nudge the gain up or (you've guessed it) shift-alt-down
arrow to nudge it down.
When working with multiple tracks, an important consideration is the overall
level. If - say - you bring each track up to 0db their combined level will be
too loud.

Another thing that you may find useful is panning. Shift-p allows you to enter
a value between minus 1 (far left) and 1 (far right. Shift-alt-left and right
arrows can also be used.
There are a couple of really nice tools not included with Audacity which I keep
meaning to discuss here in detail. Panramp allows panning over a selection and
Text Envelope does the same with volume. I hope to have more time after next
week.
Finally, I strongly agree with Stan. Upgrading to 2.4.1 would be a smart move.
Scrubbing alone makes it worth while.

Hello: This is my first post to this list. I am just getting into Audacity
recording and have figured out how to do multi-track recording.
What I can't figure out is how to mix the tracks I have recorded. Surely there
is an easier way besides raising and lowering volume of tracks in the effects
menu, at least I hope there is. I have searched help to no avail, so please
don't tell me to RTFM without telling me what to read.
