I don't know, try it out to check what happens. Somewhere in preferences keyboard commands can be changed, I'll check how, because I understand from someone in Finland that the left and right brackets are difficult to use.

 Yes David, you are right.
 In gold wave, when playing a track, you can pause play, put in a left
 bracket [ then play on to where you want to end the section, and put a
 right
 bracket ]  and the part between the brackets are selected, for effects or
 editing.
