David B.,
That did it. Audacity was checked and as soon as I un-checked it everything
was back to a very welcome normal. Once again, thanks to everyone. On another
note, has anyone tried John Martin’s Jaws scripts for Spotify? Take care and
any fireworks out there tonight will not be me blowing up my computer thanks to
you all.

Hi stephen,
given that you've reinstalled audacity, I doubt it's a problem with audacity
itself.
One possibility is that the Jaws script has not been completely uninstalled.
If a script is installed, it is easy to disable it, as follows:
1. Press Jaws Key + J to make the Jaws window the focus.
2. Open the Options menu, and choose manage applications settings. A dialog
opens.
3. In the list box, if there is an Audacity item and it is checked, then
uncheck it.
4. Press Enter to press the default OK button.
If there's still a problem, you could try using the narrator screen reader with
Audacity to check whether it is still a Jaws problem. You can start and stop
narrator by pressing windows key + ctrl + Enter. Audacity works well with
narrator.

Hello David and anyone willing to listen,
Well things have gone from bad to worse. This time when I un-installed the
scripts the problem persisted unlike before when they went away. After
re-booting several times I decided to un-install Audacity completely and
re-install it. I was told by Jaws that some items had to be un-installed
manually. I did a re-boot in between and then re-installed Audacity. I
checked reset preferences in case I had changed something accidentally. During
the re-install I was told that x86 Audacity already exists and did I want to
install there and I replied yes. After all was said and done and adding full
keyboard in Preferences the problem is still there. It’s as if the arrow keys
have gone completely haywire. In any direction throughout the program I get
the, there are no tracks in the project message. In the toolbar with the
meters and the device selections for choices where I would have to arrow up
and down to change the selection such as Audio Host the arrow button gives me
the tracks message. I found that holding Control down with the up or down
arrow allowed me to make the selection. So I tried playing the track to see
if Control right or left arrow would move me through it but no such luck, in
fact it just silenced the track. Another strange thing is at times ALT will
only open the Systems Menu. I’m sorry I ever tried these scripts and wonder if
I’ll ever get back to where I was before. All suggestions are Welcome.

When I hit Home, either bracket and Shift+Space I get the dreaded message for
them all, just like with the arrow keys. Basically all I can do is play and
pause and can only export through the menu. I get the same message with
control+shift E. I’m off for the night. I won’t un-install until tomorrow in
case some magic solution may come in overnight. Take care.

Try this:
1. Import a track
2. Press “home” to go to the beginning of the audio
3. Press enter to select the track
4. Press space to start playback
5. Press left brace and then a few seconds later press right brace (this
will select the left and right edge of a segment of audio
6. Press space to stop
7. Press shift+space to start a loop playback. Does it play the part of
the track you selected?
This should work with or without the scripts loaded. BTW, you can disabled the
Audacity scripts without uninstalling them. Happy to walk you through that,
too, assuming you are interested.

Here we go. I compiled successfully and there was no change. I’m current with
Windows 10 since they don’t give us a choice. I believe I’m working with 64
bit. An example of my editing would be after recording a track or importing
one and I want to take off some space in the beginning I’ll start the trackck.
I’ll hit space to start play and use the right and left arrow keys to go back
and forth until I’m happy where I am and hit P to pause. When doing this after
installing the scripts every time I hit an arrow key I get the message that
there is no track in the project and they don’t move the cursor. . I get no
response with the J and K keys and I cant make any selections to delete what I
want. So, that’s where I’m at now. I’ll sleep on it tonight and see what you
or anyone else can come up with. I’ve been working without the scripts for
three years now so if we can’t solve this it won’t be the end of the world. I
do really appreciate all the help from this list.

Yah, I think so. Someone, earlier in the thread, mentioned that you might want
to try re-compiling the scripts.
To do this:
1. Open Audacity
2. Press JAWSKey+f2, then ‘s’ until you hear “script manager” then press
enter
3. Arrow down a little and you should hear the contents of the
audacity.jss file
a. Might be worth arrowing down until you hear the version number and make
sure it’s the latest (Const CS_SCRIPT_VERSION = "2.2.2-beta-2020-06-21")
4. Either way, to compile the scripts, press control+’s’, you’ll hear JAWS
compiled successfully – or not. Either way it will be a clue.
5. Now alt+tab back to Audacity and see if things work like you expect
a. I’d enjoy hearing what you do to edit normally. Maybe the scriptset is
blocking your work-flow?
6. Another good thing to check is your screen resolution. Know how to do
that? If not, I’m happy to guide you.
You are using the latest Windows 10, right? Is your system 32 or 64 bit?
Anyhoo, I’ll quit pestering you about this if you aren’t interested in
debugging it.

David

Then launched Audicity. Am I missing something here?

Okay David, I just ranthe the installer again. I did not have Audacity open
when I ran it. The version is 222beta20200621. I installed the full version.
I was not asked about Jaws since there is only one version on the PC. I
confirmed that I’m working with the full keyboard. I imported a file after the
installation and have the same issue. Everything I do tells me that there are
no tracks in the project. Really weird. Off to un-install again.

Hi David, When installing the scripts I just went as straightforward as I
could, not getting fancy on anything. Yes, I have full keyboard enabled. As
far as toolbars are concerned all I’ve worked with are autio host, recording
device and playback device. I’ll try to install them again and see what
happens since it’s easy enough to un-install them. More to follow.

Curious about a couple of things:
1. Did you do a “full” version of the JAWS scripts for Audacity install?
2. Did you select anything in the install other than the defaults?
3. Did you make sure and replace all files when prompted?
I ask because I have had troubles with the installer not compiling if I choose
options other than the defaults during the Audacity scripts installation.
Also, do you have the full set of keyboard shortcuts enabled in Audacity? To do
this you can:
1. Go to Preferences (control+’p’)
2. Navigate to Keyboard, tab to the defaults button under key bindings and
press enter
3. Arrow to Full and press enter
4. Tab to the OK button and press enter to close Preferences
One last thing: Have you made any changes to your Toolbars in Audacity?
1. Under View->Toolbars is an option to reset your toolbars – you could
try that.
2. Also, directly below the Toolbars sub-menu is a checkbox that says
“Show Extra Menus” press enter on that to show some extra functionality in the
menu system.
Hoping to work this out for you… the scripts do make some things quicker while
using JAWS. I bet you’ll enjoy them!

David

Hi David,
I’m using audacity 2.4.2 installed by the installer. I installed the scripts
from the link from your post on Tuesday. Jaws 2020 is the only version of Jaws
on this computer. I un-installed the scripts and all is good now. The main
things on the scripts that interested me was the level checking with g. So,
not a big deal. Now if I can just find a way for a blind guy to navigate
Spotify Premium I’d be a happy camper. Any suggestions anyone? Take care and
again, thanks for the help.

Are you sure you installed the scripts on the version of JAWS you always use?

Here’s a follow up to my problem. I removed my USB interface and have returned
sound settings and Jaws back to there original defaults. I’ve imported both a
professionally recorded file and one I recorded myself and there is no
difference in the behavior. I can’t do any editing shortcuts and whatever I do
with the arrow keys all I get is the message, There are no tracks in the
project. I’ve un-selected and Re-selected the track using Enter, I’ve used
Control-A and I’ve tried K-J, which Jaws doesn’t verbalize and all I get is,
There are no tracks in the project. The track will play with the space bar and
will pause but will not respond to the arrow keys, just that dreaded message
keeps coming back. I can export through the File menu without issue. This all
began with the installation of the scripts. Will someone please instruct me
how to remove them. I’ll be happy to be back where I was before. Thanks.

David,
Yes, yes and yes. The scripts are from the post you put out this week and
Jaws 2020 is the only version I have on this unit. It’s very strange. This
happens with the internet recording. I want to import a file and see if I get
the same reaction. I’ll post what I find. Anyway I’’m not opposed to just
removing the scripts if I could get instructions on how to do so. Thanks for
any advice.

What version of Audacity are you using? You said “latest”, did you mean 2.4.2?
What version of the scripts are you running? You said “latest”, does this mean
Jaws-Script-for-Audacity_2_2_2-beta-2020-06-21?
Also, when you installed the “latest” scripts, are you certain you installed
them into JAWS 2020? The installer dialog gives you the opportunity to install
the scripts to any previous versions of JAWS that you might have installed on
your machine.
Just checking…

Hello,
I installed the latest Jaws scripts to the latest version of Audacity and am
having nothing but problems since. When I try to do anything to a project such
as trim space from the beginning or even fast forward with the arrow keys I get
a message that there is no track in the project. I get the same message when
trying to export using control space E. I can export through the file menue
but I can’t do any editing to the recording. How can I go about un-installing
the scripts. Or am I missing something here? I’m running Windows 10 and Jaws
