Yes, as you have discovered, Audacity does not allow you to insert directly
into a given point on a track. A quick summary which will possibly tell you
where your recorded intro finished up. With no tracks in the project,
pressing r will create a track and start recording (spacebar to stop).
Pressing r again will append to the track. So, regardless of where your
cursor is on the track, pressing r will append the new recording to the
track. Pressing shift-r will record onto a new track, starting from where
the cursor is.
Your approach or recording onto a new track and cutting and pasting is
eminently workable. Just make sure that you have no audio selected in the
target track before pasting or it will be overwritten.
When too many choices are not enough, here is another option. Arrow to the
track that is to contain your intro. Press r to record the intro. It will
be at the end of the track. Here is where Audacity's clips feature can come
into play. When you record your intro, a second clip will be created
automatically. To navigate between clips use alt+, (comma) to go to a
previous clip and alt+. (fullstop) to go to the next clip. You can
therefore navigate to your freshly recorded intro. Importantly, this will
select your entire intro. Press control+x to cut, press j to go to the
beginning of the track and control+c to paste.
As mentioned, using the previous and next clip commands selects the entire
clip. If you do what I just did and use alt+comma to go to the previous
clip and paste its contents will be overwritten.

Subject: [audacity4blind] Inserting new section into a track
Yes it's me again!!
Thank you so much to those of you who responded to my earlier post about
editing a track and adding audio from one track to another - I think I'm
getting there slowly but surely and at least have been able to edit two
I would now like to be able to insert some audio into the beginning of each
track i.e. an intro to what will be the main podcast audio - what's the best
way of doing this?
I have tried just recording at the start of a track but when I play it back
the newly recorded segement doesn't appear to be there. Do I need to
record the intro section as a new track and then cut and paste it into the
main track ?
As ever any help greatuflly received.
With thanks in advance
