Yes, you are correct about crossfading. Assuming you are using the current
or fairly recent version of Audacity, you want Crossfade Tracks under the
Effects menu.
The following may sound daunting. Once you get the hang of it, though, the
process works well.
The first step is to position your outro track so that it starts the several
seconds before the podcast track ends. Here, Align Tracks under the Tracks
Menu is your friend. Let us know if you have trouble with that.
Importantly, your outro track must be below the podcast track.
Having positioned the tracks to give the amount of overlap you desire, you
now want to apply the crossfade. I found the following process to work
well.
Select the podcast track and deselect the outro track. Position the cursor
on the podcast track where the outro track starts and select to the end of
the podcast track. Then arrow down to the outro track and select it. That
will highlight the same amount of audio on both tracks.
From the Effects Menu, select Crossfade Tracks. There are several options,
described in detail in the manual. They suggest Constant Power 1 for many
situations, but experiment to see what works for your situation. Bear in
mind that if you do not like the result you can always undo.
I suspect you will want more than a few seconds of overlap but, again, see
how it sounds.

Hello. I have two tracks in my podcast. I want to start the outro a few
seconds before the actual podcast ends. How is this done? I'm thinking that
some one of the fading features would be used. Is this correct? If so, How
do you use these to greatest advantage? Thanks for any help you can give me.
