Thanks, Gene for taking the trouble to reply extensively.

Adina, if you have not already found it, there is also an excellent
guide to using Audacity Beta with JAWS here:

It's difficult to describe the procedure for selecting text in writing.
Being able to demonstrate it would be much easier and the description
would be more clear. It is also difficult to know how much detail to go
into because I don't know what you already know about different ways of
moving through a file in Audacity. If you have questions or problems
implementing these descriptions, let the list know and ask further
questions.

There is more than one way to select a part of a file. I'll describe one
way. the cursor always is at the start of a file unless you change its
position. If you want to select from the start of the file, don't move
the cursor. If you want to start selecting farther into the file, you
need to move the cursor. Start the file playing. If you just want to move
the cursor a little, you can let the file play. If you want to move the
the cursor farther into the file, move through the file by repeatedly
tapping the right arrow key or by pressing and holding it. Release the
key to see where you are. Move left by using the left arrow key in the
same ways. If you are moving more than just a small amount, unload JAWS
before moving. JAWS intercepts keystrokes and will significantly slow
down the speed of moving if you press and hold the right and left arrow
keys. When you are about where you want to select, stop moving and let
the file play. There is a brief delay between the time you issue the
selection command and the time the cursor moves. To move the cursor, tap
the left bracket key. That is the key immediately to the right of the
letter p. You will see what the lag is as you experiment. For now, tap
the key about a second before the file actually plays the part where you
want the selection to begin. Because of the delay, the selection will be
a bit later in the file than where you press the key. Stop play by
pressing the space bar, then start play by pressing the space bar. Play
begins from the cursor position. If the position is still a bit before
where you want it, stop play, then press the space bar again. Don't wait
for the file to start to play. Immediately or just a tiny bit after you
press the space bar to start play, press the left bracket key again. This
will move the cursor a tiny bit to the right even though the file has not
started to play yet. Once play begins, stop play, then start play again
to see if you have moved the cursor to the correct position. If you need
to know how to move the cursor a bit to the left, let us know. You will
want to move the cursor a bit to the left, then line it up again as I've
described if you set the start of the selection a bit to far beyond where
it should be.

Now you need to set the right marker, which is where the selection will
end. Start the file playing and let it play. Once you are about a second
before the place where you want to set the right marker, tap the right
bracket key. the right bracket key is immediately to the right of the
left bracket key. Because of the same lag I spoke of earlier, the right
marker will be set a bit to the right of what you are hearing when you tap the key. You have now selected the part of the file between the cursor and
the right marker. If you are setting the right marker far enough to the
right of the cursor that you don't want to let the file play for a minute
or two minutes or ten minutes or longer, start the file playing, and move
by using the right arrow while the file is playing. I won't go into this
in more detail because I don't know what you already know about moving in
this way. Once you are near the place where you want to set the marker,
follow the procedure I described above. If you set the right marker a bit
too far to the right, Start the file playing and either let it play or
move to a point near where you have set the right marker. then, when you
estimate that pressing the right bracket key will place the marker where
you wish, press it. If you set the marker too far to the left, you have
to use a different procedure to move it a little to the right. the file
won't play past the point where the right marker is set. Therefore, you
have to move the marker to the right so you can then play the file farther
and set the marker as it plays. To move the marker use the following
procedure:
Start the file playing. Press and hold shift. Tap the right arrow key as
many times as necessary to get to the place where the file stops playing.
. Then tap it one more time. Release the shift key. Start the file
playing again and either let it play or move to near where you want to set
the marker with the right arrow key. Then let the file play. Once you
are at the place you estimate is correct, set the marker with the right
bracket key. Check to see if it is set in the right place by playing the
file and seeing where it stops playing. Of course, you can move while the file is playing to near the place where the marker is set and then let the
file play.

All this may seem complicated. Experiment and see if it still seems
complicated after you do some experimenting and practicing. If you
understand how to move through files in Audacity, the descriptions will
make much more sense, at least as you practice and see what happens.
