But the original message specifically says that the microphone is plugged into
the microphone jack. So the question is whether this computer has a microphone
jack and an earphone jack or just one jack? The internal microphone is listed
as a source.
My laptop, which is a Toshiba has both an earphone jack and a microphone jack.
But plugging a microphone in to the microphone jack has no effect on the
sources listed. The microphone is listed in the same way.

That's what was saying - think that with this laptop, you might need to in fact
use an additional/external audio adapter to in fact have a separate
microphone/line-in to work with.
And, this is on a lenovo w52 laptop - not sure if the other models might have
different hardware setups, but, just thought Sameer might also need to work
with something else, since only way have really managed to get this one to
record much is using it's internal microphone turned down to lowish input
levels - not too bad sound quality, but, not the same as proper external
microphones.

Then you are saying that there is no microphone jack? In that case, I don't
know if there is any way to switch the headphone jack so that it serves as a
microphone jack.

Gene, issue is this lenovo doesn't offer any form of separate microphone, or
line-in socket - only a single 3.5mm audio socket where I generally have just
speakers plugged in, and, AFAIK, it can use dual jack headphones, etc., or
something, but, am not sure if the hardware would then just replace the
internal microphone's input with that one, or not, so that's all was saying.

It's not a USB microphone is it? You say its plugged into the microphone
jack. Then try wha5tever is available as the source. A computer, as far as I
know, doesn't know or reflect what microphone is plugged into the microphone
jack or whether one is at all. In my experience, if you select the only
microphone choice available, it will use the external microphone if plugged in.
You are introducing a new microphone into the circuit, not changing the source.

Sameer, my lenovo only seems to have a single input socket for something
like a dual microphone/headphone, so, honestly, I think that with this
hardware, we might need to use something like an additional USB audio
adapter, but, haven't really tried it much - this is my primary machine,
but, I generally use my older, spare acer laptop, which has a proper
stereo line-ine socket for recording with audacity.
