Dear Stan,

I'm very happy to hear that you are happy with your Beringer mixer. I think that the one that I am looking at is the next step up from yours, only offering a few more channels. The one that I am looking at also has a Master EQ in addition to the three individual channel EQ's. Does yours have the Master EQ as well?

Since I now have an Audacity that is working properly, can someone please explain two features? First, what are the two channels that are created each time I record. For example if I record one track, the Audacity menu ends up showing two tracks. Are they simply the left and right channels of the track that I recorded?

Also, what is the difference between Audio Track, and Stereo Track offerings on the Track menu? Are they simply what I am assuming, and the Audio Track selection is a mono track, while Stereo Track is just that, a stereo track?

Thanks for your help! I am becoming an Audacity recording mad man! LOLL

Respectfully,
James

Hi James and others,
I have the Behringer X1204USB with effects. It is very accessible and quiet. I use it to record on my PC with audacity as well as out on small gigs as a main mixer and on larger gigs as a secondary mixer. I can indeed toggle through the various effects by listening through the headset. I love the real time compression knob for each channel and the 3 band EQ is awesome.
It has 4 main inputs and 2 stereo inputs.
I purchased it from http://www.musiciansfriend.com for $179.

Hello David,

The Behringer mixer that I am looking at has good reviews, and one of the things that caught my eye was that all of them mention how quiet the unit is. I will order the mixer from http://www.sweetwater.com/. You can also see more about the mixer on the Sweetwater web site, and also read some reviews.

I discussed the issue of accessibility with my salesman at sweetwater, and it sounds as if it will all be accessible. There is a window which a sighted person can read what effects are available. But I am told that in order to select an effect, you just have to turn a button and as it passes each effect, you can hear what effect is available. So if you had headphones on and repeatedly said something like "test", you could hear the effects as you turned the button. You would just have to stop turning when you found the effect that you wanted. I have read that the effects are particularly good on this unit. And Sweetwater has a really good return policy, so that makes things nice when I am trying something that I haven't used in person.

I hope that this is of some help.

Respectfully,
James

I'd be interested to know if the effects are accessible. The power supply on the Behringer 1202 I have is really noisy, that's why I'd suggest hearing it before you buy. Or, at least, have your Amazon box ready to ship it back if you don't like the bzzzz. *smile*

Peace,
David

Dear David,

I'm looking at the Behringer Xenyx X1222USB Mixer with USB and Effects.
It is getting really good reviews on line, and of course it is in my price range. It seems to have all of the features that I am looking for. I tend to avoid digital mixers because they are largely inaccessible, and although they have a lot of features, I think that they can sound somewhat dry and mechanical. I play mostly things like Jazz, folk, and other music that tends to profit by a warmer sound. I am eager to hear from anyone who has used the Behringer Xenyx X1222USB Mixer with USB and Effects, since this will be a somewhat large purchase for my budget, and I want to make sure that I am getting all that I can get for a low cost.

Respectfully,
James

The 2.1.0 scripset works with the release version of Audacity 2.1.3.

Which mixer are you looking at getting? I've got a Q12 that I would recommend avoiding. It's noisy.

Peace,
David

Hello...  Well today has been a wild and wooly Audacity day!  LOLL

OK, I have just downloaded the most current version of Audacity:
audacity-win-2.1.3.  The only JAWS scripts that I have is:
Jaws-Script-for-Audacity_2_1_0. Will this work even though it is a bit older than my Audacity, or does anyone know where I can get the scripts for my actual Audacity?

I currently am using a little Behringer interface that I paid around $30 for. It has worked great for me when I was just starting out with digital recording around a year ago. But it only allows 16 bit recording, and I now want to begin recording in 24 bit. The mixer that I am looking at is more expensive, but it looks like it will be just what I both want now, and can afford.

Respectfully,
James

Hi James

You should download the latest Audacity version 2.1.3.
Behringer hasn't updated its version for about 10 years...

Dear David,

Thank you for your help!  Audacity is giving me fits!  LOLL  I
downloaded Audacity from the Behringer web site.  It came in a file
with a

bunch of other files such as different effects.  I did not install
anything other than Audacity though, so that I could focus on one
thing at

a time. Behringer is a company that makes different musical products
such

as amplifiers, mixers, PA systems, etc.  I'm guessing that my version
of Audacity is the newest version, but I can't find what my actual
Audacity version is.  I am using a lap top with XP Professional, and
JAWS 16.0.

I did discover that part of the issue is that Audacity is not
opening a

new track when I request, and is simply recording what I record as
part of

the same track.  I started 3 new tracks with me simply saying "track
1, track 2, or track 3 respectively.  I went to Project on the tool
bar, and

clicked on Audio Track, as well as once attempting to add a Stereo Track.

The first 2 tracks were established, but for some reason non of the
ones after the first 2 were established.

My voice recorded OK, but evidently they were placed on track 1,
but track 2 appears to be empty while track 3 appears to not be
there.  I did

a JAWS to PC, as well as a simple JAWS curser.  I placed the curser
on one

of the tracks, and then pressed Enter.  But when I try to delete a
track,

or open it for other adjustments, it tells me that there is no track
selected. When I do an up and down arrow, only track 1 and track 2 is
there.  I am wondering if I should dump the Audacity that I have, and
go to the regular Audacity site to download from there.  Maybe my
Audacity is

corrupted?

Thanks for your guidance!  If it would be easier to communicate
privately without high jacking the public list, you can E-mail me at
jameskelm@xxxxxxxxxxxxx.

   Thanks again!

Respectfully,
James

Howdy,

You can select a track with the "enter" key.  It is a toggle.

Are you using the JAWS script set that Gary Campbell wrote?  Let me
know what JAWS version and what operating system you are using and I
can point

you to them.  I've been on vacation for a while so I'm trying to
catch up.

Looks like there might be alpha versions of the script set for
Windows10CE

and Audacity 2.1.3.  What version of Audacity are you using?.

Regarding only seeing 2 tracks but you hear all four tracks you
recorded... you should be able to arrow up and down to see all of the
tracks.  If not, is there any chance you recorded in stereo and there
is one instrument on the left and one on the right?  That might make
it seem

like 4 tracks but you'd only have two.

Peace,
D

Dear Sandra,

Thank you for your warm welcome!  I am looking forward to getting
to know all of the folks on this list, and of course I'm looking
forward to learning about Audacity.  I have been a professional
musician for a little

over 30 years, and I did quite a bit of recording back in the analog
days.
I am just getting started in the digital recording world however,
which is

like starting all over!  LOLL  But it's a challenge, and I've always
liked

a challenge.

I am running into a little problem in that the instruction manual
that

I downloaded for JAWS users seems to not be as compatible with the
new version of Audacity, at least as far as keystrokes are concerned.
I am slowly getting some control of Audacity, but maybe someone can
help me with two keystrokes or methods?

First of all, how do I select a track?  I can click on a track to
change its name, along with the other options like moving it up or
down in

the list, etc.  But when I try to change a track's volume level, add
an effect, etc., it says that I have to select a track first.

Secondly, how do I make it so JAWS can read more than 2 tracks?  I
have

recorded a little 4 track practice project, but although all 4 tracks
play

when I press the space bar, I can not read anything but the first 2
tracks.

Thank you for your help.  Please forgive me for being so long winded!
LOLL

Respectfully,
James
