What I am trying to do is analyze a low frequency rumble. Unfortunately it is
below the 40 to 50 Hz roll off of most common recording devices. The laptop
mic probably rolls off as well. I have an external headset mic, the same one
used by Garth Brook for live performances. It is hoped a recording can be
obtained and analyzed using Audacity.

Audacity was one of the spectrum analysis tools recommended by the National
Acoustic Physics department at the University of Mississippi. So it can
probably do what I need it to do. That is if the mic is capable.

And to the prior email. The mic does have a quarter inch plug just like an
electric guitar does.

Thanks,

Andre

Hi there. It will depende on what you really want to do. If you just
want to record your voice for a podcast for instance, you might not need
an external interface, but if you want to do something more
professional, it would be better to get a mixer that you could use to
conect to the computer, via USB, or to the audio sockets on your
computer. These days, these interfaces are not very expensive. You could
get a good one for under 200 dolars or 200 pounds.

Hope that helps.

Hi list,

Please be patient with me. I am not trained in this area.

I am new to Audacity and have it downloaded onto my laptop. My question is
this. How to I plug in external microphones? Do I need some kind of
interface box or something like that? If so how and where do I get one.

Thanks in advance.

Andre
