Audacity can record as many channels as you send to it, but it can
only record from one "device" at a time.
Thus, if you have a 2 channel (stereo) device, then Audacity can
record 2 channels from it.

If you have an 8 channel device, then theoretically you can record 8
channels simultaneously, but unfortunately that is subject to the
device drivers, and is often not supported by the standard Windows
drivers,

The other way to record multiple tracks is by "overdubbing". That is
when you record one track (mono or stereo), and then record another
track while playing back the first. Even with modest hardware it is
possible to build up 20 tracks or more and, if you want, record
yourself as an entire choir by recording yourself multiple times.

Hi Steve,

That sounds like the answer.

Now another possibly silly question. I was told Audacity is a single track
system. Is this true or can someone do multi track music recordings that
sound good on a common stereo. My application is for spectrum analysis of
low frequency rumble but I would like to know just the same.

Thanks,

Andre

To connect an XLR microphone to USB there is a good selection of "USB
microphone pre-amps". Prices start from around $60 US for a single
channel preamp (supports one microphone only) or around $75 US for a 2
channel preamp (may be used with one or two microphones). Using a good
XLR mic with a good USB preamp is one of the favoured setups for
podcasters and audiobook authors.

Hi Jacob,

Made a big mistake. My headset microphone has an XLR connector. It has
three prongs and is standard for any professional performing microphone. So
I have to have some kind of adaptor or interface for XLR to USB. I imagine
That is it if such interface even exists. Do you or anyone know if it does
exist?

So you know. My headset mic requires phantom power.

Andre, I've got an adapter here that bought at a hi-fi/sound shop that lets
me plug a jack of that size into the smaller socket - just an adapter, so
that might help you as well then..?

Like Vitor said, microphone would just offer mono, while line-in should
offer stereo, if your laptop offers it.

Stay well

What I am trying to do is analyze a low frequency rumble. Unfortunately it
is below the 40 to 50 Hz roll off of most common recording devices. The
laptop mic probably rolls off as well. I have an external headset mic, the
same one used by Garth Brook for live performances. It is hoped a recording
can be obtained and analyzed using Audacity.

Audacity was one of the spectrum analysis tools recommended by the National
Acoustic Physics department at the University of Mississippi. So it can
probably do what I need it to do. That is if the mic is capable.

And to the prior email. The mic does have a quarter inch plug just like an
electric guitar does.

Thanks,

Andre

Hi there. It will depende on what you really want to do. If you just
want to record your voice for a podcast for instance, you might not need
an external interface, but if you want to do something more
professional, it would be better to get a mixer that you could use to
conect to the computer, via USB, or to the audio sockets on your
computer. These days, these interfaces are not very expensive. You could
get a good one for under 200 dolars or 200 pounds.

Hope that helps.

Hi list,

Please be patient with me. I am not trained in this area.

I am new to Audacity and have it downloaded onto my laptop. My question
is this. How to I plug in external microphones? Do I need some kind of
interface box or something like that? If so how and where do I get one.

Thanks in advance.
