Hi Andrew, thanks for your response. I will give this a try. I would love to go
back again, unfortunately 35 years on, my wife’s singing voice isn’t as young
as it was. I’m not sure she could hit those top notes in the same way. But if I
can improve the recording in someway that will go towards putting things right.
I will let you know how I get on. I might even try and post a portion.

Without the really sophisticated (that is expensive) tools, options are
somewhat limited. Here are two suggestions.
If you have not done so already, Audacity's graphic equaliser in the Effect
Menu is well worth a shot. The problem may be that the sound of the sea covers
a fairly wide spectrum. If you can knock off some of the lower frequencies
though, that may help.
Assuming your wife's singing is at a higher frequency than the sea, it may be
worth making a copy of the track before applying the EQ. Then, having reduced
the impact of the sea on the first track, even to the point that it sounds
unimpressive, introduce the second track and play with levels.
Now for the second, out there suggestion. There is a wonderful site called
Spleeter at https://ezstems.com/. It is intended for music, so may not work at ;
all for your recording. It takes (usually) a music track and divides it into
as many as five separate tracks. Upload your file and choose at least four
stems. You will get back a zip file with - say - four wav files you can load
into Audacity as separate tracks. You just may get a track with the sea and
one with your wife's singing.
Oh, a third option. Go back to Sliegh head and do the recording again.

I have just miraculously discovered what I thought we lost recordings of our
children How’ as they’re growing up over the years. Some of them go back as far
as 1979. One of the recordings I made when we were in southern Ireland on the
furthest most coast of Sliegh head. An absolutely beautiful place. I recorded
my wife singing How’s the sea was rushing around our feet at the bottom of
cliffs as the sea was washing around our feet at the bottom of very high
cliffs but unfortunately in parts the sea is a bit too loud. Can anyone suggest
how I can decrease the volume of the background noise, but still keeping my
wife’s singing voice at the same volume. I’ve managed to clean up the recording
to a certain extent but would love to try and improve the balance. I’m sure
there must be somebody more experienced out there who could give me a few
ideas. Using NVDA Windows 10.
