[audacity4blind] Compress or encrypt attributes

Hi All.
Having converted a Audacity project to MP3, I notice that in the Properties
section there is a option to compress or encrypt attributes to save space.
Could anyone explain what is meant by encrypting and compressing a file? if
Either of these choices help save space, does it then loose any sound quality.
Finally, are the files still easily accessible for listening.
Any help gratefully received.
