What other software can you record with? You might want to look at the
playback and recording setting for that app that works and set it the same
in Audacity.

I'm using audacity with windows 7.
I have it on two computers. I can't record on any of them.
I've tried both stereo mix, and line in.
I can record with other software but not audacity.

volume/playback/recording settings. There's a "mute" checkbox in there that
can be elusive, depending on the drivers you have for your specific device.
I'm still puzzled by the Windows volume control automatically muting when I
use the sliders to adjust recording levels in the Transport pane of
Audacity.
Can't wait to hear what OS and device you are using Audacity with.
