On the toolbar where you initiate recording, what is the input volume level set
to?
After recording, if you then select all, and move over to selection bar, what
does the selection length show up as?
And, there are indeed jaws scripts for audacity, but, AFAIK, they primarily
offer information relating to track selection, etc., as well as offering a
couple of additional keystrokes, but, don't think it would affect this:

Hi.
There is no problem with levels at all.
I'm recording, and then exporting.
I get a very small mp3-file.
it doesn't record anything at all.
I wish there was jaws scripts for audacity, that had been easier.

What's your input/recording volume level set to in audacity itself?
Ask, partly since I have mine set quite low, due to background noise,
getting it to record slightly different drum sounds, etc., and I then
just amplify any recording afterwards, but, at times, it might sound
almost like it didn't record at all, until I amplify it.
Besides that, have you possibly tried different microphones, etc.?
Just asking since have come across microphones in the past that had
their own volume controls/mute slider switches, etc., but anyway -
probably not relevant at all.
Stay well

Hi.
I'm using audacity with windows 7.
I have it on two computers. I can't record on any of them.
I've tried both stereo mix, and line in.
I can record with other software but not audacity.

I've also had the input device accidentally muted in the Windows
volume/playback/recording settings. There's a "mute" checkbox in
there that
can be elusive, depending on the drivers you have for your specific
device.
I'm still puzzled by the Windows volume control automatically
muting when I
use the sliders to adjust recording levels in the Transport pane of
Audacity.
Can't wait to hear what OS and device you are using Audacity with.
Hopefully we can help with that!
Peace,
