Audacity has an option in amplify that prevents audio from being
raised about 0 dB, not to mention the target peak that you can enter
in amplify and normalize.
Also, the effect is not printed, it is just the take volume that's
being modified.
This has consequences if I want to work with a recording with my
secondary editor (melodyne). I have the pre-take-fader volume and not
the normalized one.

Well, I use them in tandem.
Audacity is my first external editor for Reaper.
For instance, Reaper sucks on normalizing recordings so I open it with
Audacity and save it back.
Using Osara, the accessibility is better in reaper, for instance the
peak watcher tells you when a certain input level is reached.
The advantages of Audacity are the macros, the Nyquist language, the
auto save facility and label/clips (well, let's say different, not
better).
Want to know any specifics?
