Jacob and Gene
Thanks guys, I did something right this time and now Audacity works as it
should again. I did issue sndvol command and both audacity's volume was at 100
and mute wasn't turned on. Suppose the bad fairy who caused the problem hang
the head in shame and corrected her fun.

Hettie, in windows7 sound volume dialogue, what Gene was referring to are
separate volume sliders for separate pieces of software - when audacity is
running/playing, windows key + R, for run dialogue, type in sndvol, hit enter,
and then tab over until you land on a volume slider specifically for audacity,
and make sure it's set to 100% as well, and that it's specific mute checkbox
isn't checked.

To close that sound volume controller dialogue, just hit F4 after making changes

Stay well

Hi Gene
Thanks for the suggestions. I followed your instructions. Everything is in
order with Audacity, but still no sound. My son says he can see it playing
but no sound.
The speakers are ok with nvda and mp3's. I must've done something real
stupid but don't know what. Suppose I'll have to uninstall and then
reinstall. Will leave that for tomorrow.

What version of Windows are you using? If you are using Vista or higher,
open the Windows volume control while audacity is playing. Even if you
don't hear any audio, if you issue the correct play command, it will be
playing, you just won't hear audio.
To make sure you are in the same place as I am describing, open the volume
control in this way:
Open the run dialog.
type sndvol and press enter.
Once the volume control opens, tab around until you find audacity in the
volume control settings.
See what the settings are. Is the mute check box checked? Is the volume
level correct?

I have very seldom worked directly with settings of this sort in Audacity
itself so I won't discuss how that might be done.

But if whatever you did changed the Windows volume control settings to cause
the problem, my instructions may help you find and correct the problem even
without knowing just what to look for in Audacity.
