I tried that, but when I switch the tone/pulse switch to Pulse, I still hear
tones when I dial.

Try dialing the first digit using the touch tone setting. Then switch to
pulse and press whatever buttons you want to dial. The call won't be made
since your phone system doesn't accept pulse dialing, but the pulses will be
generated by the phone if it allows you to switch the dialing method in the
middle of a call.
