I've been struggling with the same problem. I found that my typing is just
too inconsistent to reliably tap/hold a key.
My solution is to only use harmless combinations. For example, one shot on
shift, causes a capitalised letter at worst. Previously I had cases where
I'd do something and get stuck in some weird modifier or layer where all
presses trigger random shit.
That actually still happens sometimes, and I'm not sure why...

I'm having a hard time getting consistent behaviour out of mod-tap,
using the QMK firmware. I've tried different settings in config.h,
currently using the following:
#define TAPPING_TERM 200
I'm trying to use the outer columns for my modifers, so that alt is on a
and ;, shift is on z and /, and control is on q and p. The problem is
that I can't seem to avoid either not getting the modifier when I type
fast, i.e., zj when I mean J, particularly if I don't define
IGNORE_MOD_TAP_INTERRUPT, or, if I do, then I get the opposite problem -
the modifer gets applied when I don't want it.
Does anyone have any advice for how to tweak the timings/settings to
find a nice balance between the two extremes? Do I just need to train
myself to pause enough when holding a modifier key, or should I be able
to find a sweet spot that lets me type at speed without issues?
Thanks for any suggestions!
