I don't think it's the finish. I could put the nuts upside down, which is a
bit ugly IMO.
It's not enough of a problem to go hunting for the right bolts.
It's useful to be able to open the keyboard sometimes...

It's possible that whatever finish you applied to the wood resulted in a
final size that is significantly thicker than the original
wood. Different finishes behave differently, and unfortunately I can't
have a "standard" finish because including it in the kit would
make shipping complicated and probably impractical.
The lock nuts are chosen specifically because they are fairly
forgiving; if the screws are too long the lock nuts will still work
fine. But if they're too short that's another matter. You may need to
look for 18mm M3 machine screws; the ones included in the kit are 16mm.
Behold, the tented Atreus! Not recommended for actual use, as it lags
massively and layers don't work obviously.
