As I alluded to a while back, I've been working on a new project I call
the Atreus Deck:
It's an add-on kit to the Atreus keyboard that turns it into a small
standalone shoulder-slung mini-laptop.
I've finally worked out the bugs in the system, and I'm ready to accept
orders for kits. I've got them available in wood and acrylic, and I can
include an extra set of top and bottom plates for the keyboard with the
Deck kit if you want to replace the ones you have to match your Deck.
At this stage I would still characterize it as suitable for early
adopters. I've been using my prototype for a month or so now, but it's
got a few rough edges. The documentation is definitely not as polished
as it is for the main keyboard kit; I am opening it up first to this
mailing list in hopes that your feedback can help make it better.
In the interests of setting reasonable expectations, don't expect this
to be your primary computer. I have been using it mostly as an SSH
terminal (https://termux.com gives you a capable SSH terminal as well as
a local chroot environment with a decent selection of non-graphical
packages) because most of the software I use on a day-to-day basis runs
over SSH. But your apps you use on your mobile phone should run fine too.
Please note that the kit does not include the mobile device itself;
you'll have to source a Galaxy S5 yourself. They're available for under
$100 on eBay; just be sure not to get the Verizon variant which can't
have its OS upgraded. Also note that the Deck is intended to be used
like a laptop rather than one of those keyboard/stand/dock setups where
you can connect your phone for a session then take it out and put it in
your pocket. Adding that kind of flexibility would make the whole design
less sturdy, so I wanted to focus on building it out as a single unit.
I'm excited to start offering this and hope you enjoy it. For the next
couple weeks if you mention you heard about it on the mailing list in
the comments field of your order, you'll get $10 off the kit price.
Let me know if you have any questions!
